Topic 2: Promote independence

Worker supporting older person with walking stickIn community services often the focus is on the person’s condition or their challenges. It is important for workers to recognise that each person has a range of strengths and abilities they can draw on to improve wellbeing and maintain independence. Being independent helps people feel in control of their lives and gives them choices about how and when they will do certain activities. Independence gives people self-esteem and confidence. Self-management and independence for each person should be a goal of all workers.
