The hierarchy of control
It will never be possible to remove all hazards from your work setting, but you must do everything you can to contribute to containing and minimising the risks. The hierarchy of control provides a framework for the development of these measures. For the greatest level of reliability and effectiveness, elimination of the hazard should be the goal; however, if this is not possible then the risk should be minimised using other strategies such as engineering or administrative controls. PPE, a level three control, is the lowest level of health and safety protection, and is the least effective method of control. Examples of control measures within each level of control are provided here.
